As a boy growing up in Southern New Jersey Ed Sheetz was very interested in the legend of the Jersey Devil. This interest followed him into adulthood, where he began his career as a free lance artist. He decided to draw his own original version of the Devil. By 1969, after many preliminary drawings he chose the below rendering depicted by his carving. Pleased with the result, Ed had his drawing duly copyrighted.
Shortly thereafter he decided to have his drawing printed on postcards and began selling them. This proved to be highly successful, so he subsequently had T-Shirts made and began selling them. Following that he then drew up four more postcard designs, using his same drawing, but in somewhat different positions. He then added posters and sweatshirts to his growing inventory.
Ed decided to call his Devil, "The Original Jersey Devil", since extensive research had indicated he was the first person to have T-Shirts and other items made using a Jersey Devil design. Ed's drawing is the most popular and sought after.
